Mývatn & Húsavík from Akureyri
From Akureyri · 09:00–18:25
The best of the north in a day: the waterfall of the gods, the lava labyrinth at Mývatn, a cowshed café, a hot soak and Iceland's whale-watching capital.
- 09:00 Akureyri – Leave the capital of the north over the Vaðlaheiði tunnel.
- 09:40 Goðafoss – The 'waterfall of the gods', where legend says the old idols were thrown in when Iceland took up Christianity.
- 11:15 Dimmuborgir – Walk among the dark lava pillars and arches – the 'dark castles' of Mývatn.
- 12:10 Vogafjós – Lunch in a working cowshed café – home-made mozzarella, geysir bread and lamb, while the cows look on.
- 13:20 Mývatn Nature Baths – The north's answer to the Blue Lagoon – smaller, quieter and with views over the lava fields.
- 15:50 Húsavík – Harbour walk, the Whale Museum, and Húsavík Öl's taproom for passengers. In summer, add a 3-hour whale-watching trip.
- 18:25 Akureyri – Back in Akureyri: dinner with a view at Strikið and a nightcap downtown.
